The Deal Society held its first Youth Forum at the Landmark Centre on Monday, 25 February, the focus the needs of youth in our area. The Forum was led by Bill Butler, Area Youth Officer for Dover and Thanet, who brought along an impressive display and materials on opportunities for young people in the area.
He introduced two students, Jim Heath and Oliver Tester from Castle Community College, who gave their impressions and comments on issues that they felt were of concern to them and other young people in the area, eg while there are many activities for young people, it was difficult to find out what was happening, when and where.
There are some 6,500 young people in the Deal area and 60-80 youth
clubs or organizations to which they can belong. Yet the activities of
these clubs are not advertised properly. According to Jim and Oliver,
most congregations of young people are of an innocent nature, but they
are often misunderstood or misinterpreted by adults and authorities as
unruly action.
All together, the Forum provided an opportunity to look at a number of
issues, which can be further explored in the future consideration. And
it was generally agreed by those who particpated in the meeting that
the concerns of young people are the concerns of the Deal Society.
Further information on the evening will be provided in the next News Update
