Bateman’s and Scotney Castle

The beautiful 17th century manor house set deep in the Sussex Weald was the home of Rudyard Kipling.  Most of the rooms, including his book-lined study, are as Kipling left them.  The delightful grounds, containing roses, wildflowers, fruit and herbs, run down to a small river.  Scotney is not one but two houses.  At the top is the new house designed in Elizabethan style and built in 1837; at the bottom of the valley is the romantic ruin of a medieval castle and moat.  The estate offers a variety of walks through beautiful parkland and woodland.
